The concept for the Fugue project emerged as a spin-off from the work on the Art Council England-funded prototype for Algorithmica , a large-scale art work partly inspired by the immune system. When Dr. Bentley, a specialist in artificial immunology and collaborator on the project, showed the visual model produced for the art work to some practicing immunologists, their strong interest suggested the possibility of developing a new method for the visualisation of the immune system, giving equal weight to art and science.

Other than being an online magazine it is a protest more than anything. Rodeo 27 is a revolt against commercialism, and an ongoing series of splash strips involving various designers. Rodeo 27 is a non profit playground for graphics and art. We only serve the few who care and we do little to please the masses. We oppose against the general idea, that all Internet content should be light, focused on profit, and built for 10 second browsing.

SimpleTEXT is a collaborative audio/visual public performance that relies on audience participation through input from mobile devices such as phones, PDAs or laptops. SimpleTEXT focuses on dynamic input from participants as essential to the overall output. The performance creates a dialogue between participants who submit messages which control the audiovisual output of the installation. These messages are first parsed according to a code that dictates how the music is created, and then rhythmically drive a speech synthesizer and a picture synthesizer in order to create a compelling, collaborative audiovisual performance. SimpleTEXT was originally funded by a commission from Low-Fi, an new media arts organization based in the UK.

Tokyo-based DJ Daito Manabe has devised a unique use for a turntable: he hooked it up to a multiple-PowerBook rig so you can scratch 34 tracks of sound or sit back in a vibrating chaise longue. I asked Daito how this works, and responded in an email that reads a bit like a poetic riddle:

Chair for the silence consists of two elements. The first one is a chair that can provide 32 vibrations, the second is music of 34 tracks for touch and hearing. People can experience this by sitting in the chair and dropping the phonograph needle.

We can recognize pursuing sensual peculiarity, commonality and interaction between sounds and vibration by this chaise longue.

The vibrations from vibrators are from 5hz to 120hz, and sounds from headphone are from 5hz to 80hz.

34 tracks (2ch * 14) sound files are controlled by a signal from Ms.Pinky. It means people can scratch 34 tracks by one record.

More specs and images after the jump, if that still doesn't make sense . . .

Using state of the art, real time motion capture technologies and motion analysis techniques, the movement of the dancers and the structures of the choreography are analyzed in real time. Through novel artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction systems, the results of the analysis informs the creation of digital graphics and sound environments that react to, accompany, enhance and comment on the choreography.

The works investigate future possibilities for interactive art works while exploring the effects of the new digital sensing, processing and creation possibilities on the human condition. They propose integrations paths that will allow these technologies to enhance and promote humanism.

PixelRoller is a paint roller that paints pixels, designed as a rapid response printing tool specifically to print digital information such as imagery or text onto a great range of surfaces. The XP10 is a controller for digital DJs, with a "high precision" wheel for cueing and scratching similar to those found on many scratchable DJ CD players. Coupled with the included Bison software for your computer, it can act as a DJ mixer for MP3s, with OGG support in the works. (Currently, the software only runs on Windows, but Mac compatibility is planned.) It's also a high-quality audio interface, with a 105dB signal-to-noise ratio.

While we're on the subject of scratch controllers, I love my Mixman DM2 USB controller. I use it on Windows to control VJ applications (and occasionally scratch audio samples in performance, too). After all, why should the DJs get to have all of the fun? The ring doesn't feel terrific exactly -- sure, I'd love a real deck -- but it cost me only about $20 via an online supplier. (Buyer beware: Mixman doesn't let you download drivers, so you'll want a packaged version.)

The DM2 doesn't work out of the box with MIDI, though. Enter the Windows-only software DM2MIDI. (See also the great user forum.) No Mac support, but it's a dream with my PC. DM2MIDI's free and terrific. Install MIDI-Yoke to route MIDI to your favorite app, and you're good to go.

I was curious, though what Mixman had up their sleeve for their next product, and if they'd ever support MIDI. Boy, did I get a response: according to Mixman, the DM2MIDI software is "illegal." Mixman has also cracked down on users trying to host the driver software for their hardware. Here's what Mixman's Rico Appelbaum had to say:

DM2 as a product is being replaced this X-mas season with the new "Mixman MP3 Producer". As well, there is another product, more advanced, called "Mixman LoopStudio" (you can read about it on our site) which both are combinations of Mixman's custom USB Controller, Mixman Software, and Mixman Sounds.

Mixman has not endorsed nor had anything to do with any of the illegal DM2-to-MIDI applications that have grown up in the last few years.

Another new product around the controller is due out in 06. As of this time, there are no imminent plans to release a new version of the hardware though it has been in discussion.
